On 19 December 2019, the 74th UN General Assembly Designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The theme for this day is “Stop food loss and waste. For the people. For the planet.”

This day is co-convened by two organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). These two organizations jointly lead the day’s events.
The main aim of this day is to raise awareness about food loss and waste-related issues and their solutions at all levels.

Around 14% of food produced in the World is lost between harvest and retail, while an estimated 17% of total global food production is wasted, which comprises 11% in households, 5% in the food service, and 2% in retail. This is because, since the beginning of time, we have not been able to control food loss due to a lack of technique and awareness.

In this world where more than 829 million people still go hungry, reducing food loss and waste is very important.
When food is lost or wasted, all the resources that were used to produce this food – including land, water, energy, labor, and capital – go to waste, and hence the cost of remaining useful crops increases.
Food loss and waste-related problems contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases leading to an environmental detriment as well.

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is a call for both the public and private sectors to prioritize proper crop production, handling of food, and food security to reduce loss and enhance efficient use of natural resources, mitigate climate change, and support food security and nutrition.

The day also promotes global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, titled “responsible consumption and production.

To maintain  Food waste is necessary. It is not the loss of food but yes it is the loss of humanity where thousands of people are hungry with malnutrition. Food that is currently thrown away could help feed hungry people and reduce food insecurity feeding America and its network of the food bank to rescue around 3.6 billion pounds of food China waste 50 million terms of green and valley accounting for 11 10th of the country’s total green output it is also estimated at enough food to feed 200 million people about 16th of the country population goes to waste annually.

Various global initiatives have been taken to prevent food from being wasted, reducing food waste starting from school. Recognizing that children and young people are customers that will save the food waste scenario of the future, investing in their education to reduce food waste will help.

Multiple agencies collaborating with Donald’s and financial institutions and private sector partners the food packaging industry and others in order to develop and implement a program on food loss and waste production and reduction a new fan launched by the United Nation food and agriculture organization which provides insight into how much food is lost as well as where and why so that it can be prevented.

India stands 94 in the index and legs behind neighboring nation that is considered relatively v Pakistan Nepal Bangladesh and Indonesia China tops the hunger index was 16 other countries the national food waste strategy provides a framework to support collective action toward having Australia’s food waste by 2013 a sub-National level policy, to incentivize farmers for better harvesting practices it will reduce food loss experience suggest that improve aggregation of farmers through farmer producer organization and reduce the time gap between harvesting and it will save and reduce the food loss and the supply chain by 2013 global food waste at the retail and consumer level and reduce food losses along production and supply chain.

Around 9 million people die every year of hunger and hunger-related diseases. This is more than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. This is why it is important to reduce food loss so that people suffering from hunger could get food to satisfy their stomachs.  A man with a hungry stomach can’t contribute to society and a country with starving men can’t contribute to the world. This is the time for all the countries to take action so that not a single person in the world will remain hungry because of improper care of food or food loss.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Messe Dusseldorf have taken the initiative to cope with the problems related to food loss. The name of the Programme is SAVE FOOD. It has four guiding pillars: Awareness raising; Collaboration; Policy, strategy, and program development ; and Investment programs and projects.
