Nupur Sharma is a well-known Indian politician and a familiar face on the TV debates. She is a former spokesperson of BJP and a lawyer who has made an identity for herself in the political arena. Her latest stint with controversy was in June 2022 when she made a remark on Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate.
Early Life and Education
Nupur Sharma was born on October 1, 1983 in Delhi, India. She was born in a family of lawyers. Both her parents were lawyers. Born and raised in Delhi, she did her schooling from Delhi Public School, Mathura road. She graduated from the Hindu College, Delhi University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Later, she completed her Bachelor of Laws from Delhi University. While at college, she had joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP), the student wing of Sangh Pariwar. She was known as a good orator. Breaking an 8-year long dry spell for the ABVP, she won the presidency of Delhi University Students Union in 2008. She earned her degree of LLM from England’s London school of Economics.
Political Journey
A significant episode during her stint as President of Delhi University Students Union was the leading of an ABVP mob to heckle S. A. R. Geelani, the former accused in the Parliament attack case, in a faculty seminar on ‘Communalism, Fascism and Democracy: Rhetoric and Reality’. This episode carved Nupur’s image to quite an extent. She then became a member of the National Executive Committee of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). She also became National Media Co-incharge of the BJYM and managed to become a member of the state Executive Committee of the BJP Delhi Unit.
In 2015, BJP decided to field Nupur in the Delhi Assembly Elections against the present CM Arvind Kejriwal which provided a fillip to Nupur’s political career. She, however, lost the election by over 31000 votes.
A widespread chaos had broken out as a result of her latest controversy. Demand for a public apology from the BJP over her statement arose not only within, but outside the country as well. During a TV debate, Nupur had made remarks about Islamic Prophet Mohammad and the age of his third wife, Aisha, at the time of their wedding and consummation of the wedding. As a result, she has been sacked from party responsibilities.
