Indian Railway Traffic Service Exam

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India conducts the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), which is the civil service or competitive exam in India. The exam is conducted for the recruits of other Indian Railways divisions.

The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) is a Government of India-run Group ‘A’ service. The Indian Railways’ Transportation Operations and Commercial wings are both managed by the caters.

The Traffic Department is divided into two sections:

  • Operations;
  • Commercial.

Who all are eligible to sit in the exam?

  • An applicant holding a bachelor’s degree from one of the recognized universities is required.
  • Candidates who have taken or will take the certification exam and are waiting for results are also eligible to receive the preliminary exam. Including the application for the Main Examination, such candidates must provide proof of passing the said examination.
  • Candidates with government-recognized professional and technical qualifications or equivalents are also eligible to apply. Candidates who have passed their final year of MBBS or any other medical examination but have not yet completed their internship can also take the Main Exam.
  • They must, however, submit a certificate from the concerned university stating that they passed the people with the right skills’ medical examination along with their Main Examination application.
  • For candidates who fall into the following categories, the upper age limit can be relaxed:
  • 5 years if a candidate was ordinarily domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir from January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1989;
  • 3 years as a member of the Defense Services;
  • 5-year ex-servicemen, including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs, who have served in the military for at least five years as of August 1, 2015.
  • In the case of ECOs/SSCOs, the time limit is five years.
  • Blind, deaf-mute, and orthopedically handicapped people aged 10 years.
  • Nationality of aspirants eligible:
  • Citizen of India;
  • The subject of Nepal;
  • The subject of Bhutan;
  • A Tibetan refugee who arrived in India for permanent settlement before January 1, 1962.
  • Citizens of India; Migrants from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam for permanent settlement in India.
  • The minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 32 years as of 1st of August in the year of examination is eligible.

What are the Roles and Responsibilities?

  • Manages the customer interface for railways as well as coordinates the manufacture and supply of mass transit output;
  • Ensure that freight and passengers are transported smoothly and quickly.
  • Maximize output with the fewest inputs by ensuring optimal asset utilization.
  • Coordinating with service departments by looking after various railway assets such as tracks, carriages, engines, and signals combines the outputs of the various departments responsible for maintaining the assets. – fixed infrastructure and rolling stock to generate an area – passenger or transport services.
