Caste-Based Census in Bihar

To avoid conflicts, Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, launched on June 1, 2022, that a caste-based count, instead of a census, will be held in Bihar. During an all-gathering on such a caste census, the official announcement of the caste-based census in Bihar was made. The Chief Minister also stated that all parties, including the BJP, have agreed to conduct a caste-based census in one of India’s most populous states.

When asked about the caste-based census in Bihar, Nitish Kumar clearly stated that the state legislature will suggest a caste-based count rather than a census prevent legal ramifications. He went on to explain that all sides were on board with the change, such as the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has long objected to the caste-based census.

While announcing the approval of caste-based counting in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated that a proposition would be handed into the state cabinet to put it into effect. In the gathering, Nitish Kumar also laid out a timeline for the census, trying to assure that his government’s parties have agreed to conduct a caste count in the state. The Chief Minister did not provide further detail, but RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav hinted that the caste-based survey could take place after the festive seasons this year.

Bihar and Caste-based census

Most sides in Bihar, such as the opposing party RJD, have backed a caste-based population count in the state, promising that it’ll be a thing exercise that will include every specific caste, sub-castes, community, and religious doctrine and that the data will be used for the development of all sections of the population.

The state government promised that now the census report will be made public so no one is left out, and also that the mainstream press will be updated on it regularly. The current regime also claims that recognizing the population’s caste composition will lead to improved, more government programs for the most marginalized.

The decision to conduct a caste-based census in Bihar, on the other hand, will give the state political party leverage to appease the majority caste in the state.
