What is IAS Exam?

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS), formerly the Imperial Civil Service (ICS), is the Civil Services Examination and one of India’s most difficult competitive examinations. The Union Public Service Commission holds it to attract and retain officers for the All-India Administrative Civil Service.

Some basic knowledge about IAS EXAM?

·   It began as the Imperial Civil Service in 1858 and became the Indian Administrative Service on January 26, 1950. The Indian Administrative Service is the government of India’s highest-ranking organizational civil service.

·   IAS is the highest government post among the 24 services, such as IPS and IFS.

·   Officially known as the Civil Services Examination (CSE), the IAS exam is held every year by the Union Public Service Commission, which is the central recruitment and selection agency (UPSC).

·   The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is the country’s durable beaurocracy and is part of the executive branch. It is one of the 3 All India Services, and its cadre can work for the Union Government, State Governments, and public-sector organizations.

·   IPS, IFS (Foreign), IFS (Forest), IP & TAFS, IAAS, IRS, IDAS, CMSE, IRTS, IRAS, IRPS, ITS, and CAPF-AF, to identify a few, have been referred to as one of the reputable services among the 24 public services.

·   All of these exams are administered by UPSC as part of the Civil Services Examination (CSE), which is used to select qualified candidates for vacancies.

·   Each year, lakhs of candidates take this exam, putting their fortune and work, and effort to the test to be considered for one of these prominent jobs.

·   It is worth noting that any officer selected for the IAS can work for the Union government, state governments, or public-sector undertakings and gain experience in a variety of positions, including collector, head of public sector units, commissioner, and chief.

·   While on secondment outside of India, an IAS officer may work for organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), United Nations (UN) or its agencies, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), to name a few.

·   Before beginning the registration process, aspirants should familiarise themselves with the examination’s requirements, such as the UPSC IAS syllabus, pattern, eligibility criteria, application procedure, and other pertinent information.

Who all are eligible for the exam?

·   A Bachelor’s Degree from any of the recognized universities is required of the applicant. 

·   Applicants who have taken the qualifying examination and are awaiting results, as well as those who have not yet taken the qualifying examination, are eligible to take the Preliminary Exam.

·   Applicants are obliged to submit evidence of passing the said exam with their application for the Main Examination. 

·   As of August 1st of the examination year, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and no more than 32 years old.

What is the role of an IAS Officer?

·   Managing affairs of state, including policy making and implementation in consultation with relevant ministers.

·   Observing and supervising the implementation of policies, as well as having to travel to the locations where the policies will be put in place. The expenditure of funds under personal supervision is part of implementing policies.

·   Any violations of rules while on duty must be reported to the Parliament and state legislatures.

·   Cabinet Secretaries, Secretaries/Additional Secretaries, Joint Secretaries, Directors, Deputy Secretaries, and Under Secretaries are the highest-ranking IAS officers at the federal level. Seniority determines their appointment to these positions.

·   Officers may be appointed to positions in the State Secretariat, as Heads of Departments, or in Public Sector Undertakings.

·   The post of District Officer, also recognized as District Magistrate, District Collector, or Deputy Commissioner, is one of the most respected and prestigious positions held by IAS officers.
