Student violence is a serious problem in Indian universities. The nature of student violence ranges from political confrontations to shootings to sexual harassment.

In 1990, a Delhi student named Rajiv Goswami set himself on fire in protest of the suspension of rear classes. The incident led to a nationwide agitation against his then-Prime Minister V.P. Singh.

On April 9, 2000, two police officers went near the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia University and arrested two former students of the university on suspicion of having previously injured another student in Campus Violence.

Students in and around the town intervened, not allowing the police to arrest the man. Police then showed up with reinforcements and broke into the university library. A riot broke out between the two as the police accidentally caught two of her students.

Angered by the police’s unauthorized entry into the library, students initiated a street blockade in front of the university. Increased police reinforcements and attempts to eliminate protesting students resulted in brick beatings by protesting students.

According to Ratnadeep Chakraborty, banning student unions alone will not solve the problem of violence on campus. Karnataka tried to ban the student union from 1989 to 1990, but to no avail.

Student movements are also useful for good social movements.  

Student politics is closely intertwined with Indian politics. In the 1920s, many students took part in the struggle for freedom against the British rulers.

During Indira Gandhi’s reign, student leaders were repressed and 60 of his JNU students were imprisoned during his one year. Many Indian universities have banned student associations during this period.

Broadcasting violence on campus in India should be considered a major public health problem. Violations of basic rights in violent incidents show India’s inadequacy in redressing student grievances. This has affected her not only physically but also mentally.
