World Arthritis Day

Every year on October 12, World Arthritis Day is held to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders, their effects on people’s lives, the symptoms they cause, how to prevent them, and how to get an early diagnosis to avoid consequences. The goal of the day is to unite individuals from all over the world on a single platform to promote awareness and demand improved treatment choices for those suffering from rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders (RMDs).

What Is Arthritis

What Is Arthritis

Arthritis is the swelling of joints that causes joint pain and stiffness in the body part. The symptoms include Pain, Discharge, swelling, redness, and difficulty in range of motion.

The most common type of Arthritis is osteo and rheumatoid Arthritis

1. Osteo Arthritis: in this type of Arthritis the cartilage between the joints gets worn because of wear and tear. This cartilage is responsible for the frictionless movement of the joints and when there isn’t enough cartilage the movement becomes painful due to the friction that is being used to conduct the motion.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis: In this type of Arthritis, body’s own immune cells start to attack the lining of the joint capsule which is known as the synovial lining. This eventually leads to the disturbance of the cartilage and leads to greater pain in joints whenever they are moved from one place to another.

Risk Factors / Etiology

1. Family History: If your parents or siblings have arthritis, you may be more likely to have it yourself as some types of arthritis run in families.

2. Age:  Age raises the likelihood of developing several types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

3. Gender: Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women than in men.

4. prior joint damage People are more prone to later develop arthritis in a joint that has been injured, possibly while participating in sports.

5. Obesity: Your knees, hips, and spine are particularly strained when you carry extra weight. Those who are obese are more likely to get arthritis.

Significance

There are more than 100 types of Arthritis but only two of them are the most prevalent. Osteo Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Presently there are no concrete treatment options available for this disease but the only intervention is to diagnose the disease at the earliest and by identifying the signs and symptoms, the treatment is given accordingly.

Arthritis continues to be the most prevalent disease with no treatment and no awareness and it continues crippling the lives of the affected people.
