About Rhodes scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship, named after Cecil J. Rhodes, dates back to 1902. Indian students should carefully review the following eligibility criteria before applying for the Rhodes Scholarship. Rhodes Scholarships are only awarded to first-time students studying in the UK.

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens and hold an Indian passport or equivalent citizenship certificate.
  • Candidates must have completed a minimum of 4 years of formal education at an Indian institution or university.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 26 at the time of application.
  • Candidates must have a first-class bachelor’s degree.

To apply for the Rhodes Scholarship, here is a checklist of documents that must be attached to your application.

A valid Indian passport. Official transcripts of the 10th and 12th Standards Board exams
Evidence of English proficiency by providing IELTS or TOEFL scores.

Your updated resume (CV) should be less than 2 pages and consist of: Education, awards, grants, jobs, volunteer/social/political activities, and cultural, musical, or sporting achievements (Note:
(Please do not include a photo in your resume.)

A personal statement of no more than 1000 words. You should state why you deserve the scholarship and include details about your inspiration, passion, contributions, and commitment to society. 

Six professional referrals with relevant information. At least three of reviewers must be able to formally teach you and assess your academic performance.

Selection Criteria

Apart from the above academic requirements and qualifications, candidates must demonstrate a certain level of excellence to increase their chances of being selected for a scholarship. The eligibility criteria for the Rhodes Scholarship are:

Selection is based primarily on the academic performance of the candidate.
Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating talent in dance, physical education, vocal debate, drama, writing, art, or other areas that demonstrate unity and teamwork.

Candidates who possess valuable soft skills such as honesty, compassion, and protection for the disadvantaged and vulnerable increase their chances of selection.

Candidates who are passionate about leading people through exemplary behavior to improve the worrisome conditions of the world

Selection Process

Approval

Applicants from any of the Rhodes-eligible countries must apply for the Rhodes Scholarship for that country. All other applicants can apply for the Global Rhodes Scholarship.

The information below applies primarily to applicants from the United States, Canada, and other eligible countries for the Global Rhodes Scholarship.  

Be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada, a DACA recipient, or a citizen of a country not covered by an existing Rhodes scholarship.

After that, students from more countries were eligible, and in 2018, the scholarship was opened to students from all countries. Women have been accepted as candidates since 1976.

Rhodes’ wish was that scholars, while at Oxford, be distributed among all the universities, following their own inclinations as much as possible. However, the acceptance of scholars is determined by the university itself.
