The International Day of Rural Women is celebrated on 15 October to celebrate the accomplishments of women living in rural areas. The day is celebrated to highlight the important role and contribution of women in rural areas. The day focuses on gender equality and empowering women in rural areas. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by rural women.

The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Rural Women on December 18, 2007,  to stress the importance of equal opportunities for women in rural areas and to celebrate their achievements and contributions. In recognition of the challenges faced by them, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2007 announcing 15 October as the International Day of Rural Women. The UN believes that the structural barriers stop women from taking strong decisions and rural political participation. Women and girls lack equal access to public services such as education,  healthcare, and infrastructure including pure water and sanitation.

The theme for the International Day of Rural Women is  “Rural Women, key for a world free from hunger and poverty.” The theme focuses on equality and women’s empowerment and wants women to fight against the problems of hunger and malnutrition” by highlighting the important roles played by women and girls in food development in society.  The theme aims to eradicate discrimination faced by women in rural areas. There are many challenges faced by rural women in their development in society including being a rural woman employment opportunities are less for them as well less amount is paid to them after being employed women. The less amount of resources makes them less representative in society for employment opportunities. They are not getting opportunities to have a wide perspective for development as well as less freedom and chances for the upliftment of themselves. They don’t have a property in her ownership. 

What can be  done  / Solutions / Awareness

To help them, first of all, we need to address the local community or rural community. The designated authorities need to cooperate with them and have to make them aware of the schemes provided by the government. They need to encourage them to participate in political, and social economic practices and give them opportunities to uplift them. International Day of Rural Women. What can I do

Being an individual, If I want to help any woman from a rural area or any local community : 

 At first, I needed to use my networking to address them for further cooperation. I can also join some self-help groups made by women. 

To make them participate in political practices, I need to address some parliamentarians from local, regional, or national levels who can play an important role to help them.  

I can connect business women’s associations to rural women for employment opportunities. 

I can join NGOs that help these women at the same time some activists can also play the role of contributor in their life.

The International Day for Rural Women is celebrated to honor their contribution to society and the significance of the day can be as rebuilding the broken global food system from the bottom up is essential. By supporting rural women’s livelihoods to “produce and distribute diverse and healthy food crops” – it may be possible to build their resilience, skills, and leadership capabilities. 

Conclusion

The day gives us the opportunity to recognize the contribution of rural areas and most importantly women. They are the backbone of society and help in households and the agricultural sector with their family. International Day of Rural Women.
