Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Exam

The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are a group of seven security forces in India that operate under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ authority. The Assam Rifles (AR), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the National Security Guard (NSG), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Sashastra Seema Bal are the forces in question (SSB).

There are 3 modes of recruitment:

Gazetted Officers: CAPF officers are selected through the UPSC’s Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination.

Subordinate Officers: Sub Inspectors, also known as DASOs, are hired through a competitive examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (Directly Appointed Subordinate Officers).

Constables: The Staff Selection Commission conducts a competitive examination to recruit constables.

What is the eligibility for sitting in the CAPF – AC Exam?

·   No person who is not an Indian citizen may be hired or employed under these Rules unless the Central Government has given its written consent. Provided, however, that nothing in these rules prevents a subject of Nepal or Bhutan from being appointed, enrolled, or employed under these rules.

·   For the position of Assistant Commandants, both male and female candidates can apply.

·   Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from a government-recognized university to meet the UPSC CAPF Eligibility Criteria. In India, the University should be established by an Act of the Central or State Legislature.

·   Other academic institutions established by an Act of Parliament or designated as a university under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 are also allowable.

·   An age limit of 20 years is required of the applicant. On August 1st of the examination year, the candidate’s upper age limit must be 25.

Roles and Responsibilities of a CAPF-AC Officer?

·   Besides the initial regulations of boundary protecting and guarding the manufacturing corridors, Assistant Commandant (AC) leads a company of around 150 armed officers that are deployed for holding elections and maintaining normalcy (CISF). Though the CRPF is however one force that is closely engaged in maintaining order and aiding the local administration in doing so.

·   The Assistant Commandant’s responsibilities include scheduling and conducting operations, making sure on-the-job training to keep the Company operationally ready for just any situation, organizing an independent intelligence network for operational efficiency, and ensuring the efficacy and ease of maintenance of the Company’s armaments.
