The disappointment continues! What is wrong with Mumbai Indians?

The five times champions Mumbai Indians are not having a good start in this season of TATA IPL 2022 as the team has tasted defeat in the last five matches which is threatening its chances of qualifying for the knockouts. Being at the bottom of the points table, the morale of the team and skipper Rohit Sharma is not so high which is clearly visible in his post-match presentation interviews. Here are some of the main problems that the team is currently facing.

Missing key players apart from those retained

With the reshuffle of the team and transfer of some key players from the squad Mumbai Indians seems to be lacking in the player combination department. In absence of match winners like Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, and Quinton de Kock the team is finding it difficult to get in the rhythm, and without Trent boult Jaspreet Bumrah seems to be the lone fighter in the pace department. The unavailability of Jofra Archer due to injury is only rubbing salts in Mumbai’s injury. Mumbai did retain big names like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kieron Pollard but it seems like it is not enough seeing the team’s current performance.

The only positive in this is the brilliant performance of the 18-year-old South African Dewald Brewis. The Man of the Tournament of the last ICC U-19 World Cup has really impressed everyone with his power-hitting but has failed to find support from batsmen on the other end.

Failure of openers to give a good start

It seems like Rohit Sharma, the newly appointed captain of the Indian Team across all the three formats is feeling the pressure which can be seen in his performance. In the last five matches, his score has been 41, 10, 3, 26, and 28 which does not seem to be enough considering the expectations that the team has from him. He is failing to convert his starts into big finishes which are hurting the team.

On the other hand Ishan Kishan, one of the most expensive buys of the season (Rs 15.25 Crore) did have a great start where he scored an unbeaten 81 in his first match against Delhi Capitals followed by a brilliant 54 against Rajasthan Royals but after that, he too has disappointed the team with scores like 14, 26 and 3 in the next three games.

Weak middle order

The only player that is holding the fort for Mumbai Indians is Suryakumar Yadav. He did miss the first two matches due to his injury but after that has shown great performance with scores of 52, 68*, and 43 in the last three matches but has failed to get any support as the west Indians giant Kieron Pollard seems to be struggling with his form. Pollard scored 3, 22, 22*, 0, and 10 in the last five matches he played so far which is not acceptable because of the benchmark he has set for himself with his previous performances.

Weak bowling unit

Apart from Bumrah, the performance of other bowlers has not been so good. With Jofra Archer missing the action due to his injury the fast bowling lacks sharpness and is leaking runs. The spinners too have failed to give any impactful performance. With 9 matches remaining Mumbai Indians do have a chance to qualify for the playoffs but it will only be possible if their main players take responsibility and perform as the 5-time champion team did in the past.
